ACTH Stimulation Test Patient Instructions


 

• You will be given a prescription for cosyntropin. This will need to be filled prior to the day of your testing appointment.

• Do not eat for 12 hours prior to the test. You may have water.

• Do not take any steroids (hydrocortisone, prednisone, dexamethasone) for at least 12 hours prior to the test (please let your doctor know if you are taking a steroid).

• On the day of the test, you will be given an IV dose of cosyntropin (ACTH).

• Your blood levels of adrenal hormones will then be measured after 30 and 60 minutes to monitor your adrenal glands’ response to ACTH.
